I use the very basic iMovie to edit files from my video camera and from Skype video recordings.

iMovie is fine for my needs in terms of functionality (well, I'd like more audio control) but if there was a decent open-source alternative, I'd certainly look into it.

PiTiVi is one I hear referenced as an up and coming iMovie alternative.

Kino is another option, although it's focused on editing from DV sources (ie handycams), not generic video files.

I can't speak to "good" because I've never used any of them heavily, but you might check out

Of them, Blender is one that I know to be cross-platform.
